Prolapse Q & A

What is pelvic organ prolapse?Pelvic Organ Prolapse

Your pelvic organs are supported by a group of muscles and tissues. Pelvic organs include the uterus, vagina, and bladder.

When the muscles and connective tissue become weak and loose, one or more of your pelvic organs may herniate, causing symptoms of vaginal pressure. . In some cases, the organs may even protrude through the vaginal opening. Many patients with prolapse also suffer from urinary incontinence.

What symptoms suggest pelvic organ prolapse?

  • Chronic fullness, pressure, or aching in the pelvis
  • Incontinence or problems with bowel movements
  • Pain or pressure during sexual intercourse
  • Pain and discomfort inserting tampons
  • Protruding tissue poking out your vagina.

What is the treatment for pelvic organ prolapse?

The type and degree of your prolapse inform treatment. Your age, sexual habits, health, and severity of symptoms are other factors that guide treatment recommendations.

Surgery is by no means the only method to treat the condition, but is often times the preferred option by patients. Sometimes these surgeries fail to adequately correct the problem and patients seek an expert second opinion hoping for a better solution. Whether you have had prior surgery that failed, or a mesh placement is now causing you complications, you do not necessarily have to live with the condition. You may very well be a good candidate for a secondary procedure to relieve your symptoms.
