Fibroids Q & A
What are uterine fibroids?
Uterine fibroids are benign tumors that grow inside your uterus. They’re generally harmless and in most cases cause no symptoms; women may not even realize they have them.
For some women, however, the fibroids cause:
- Heavy menstrual bleeding
- Pain during sex
- Painful cramps or pelvic pressure
- Abdominal swelling
- Frequent urination
- Lower back pain
- Miscarriage or infertility
Why do fibroids occur?
The exact reason why some women develop fibroids isn’t clear.
What’s the treatment for fibroids?
Fibroids do not necessarily require treatment. Regular ultrasounds may be used to track the growth of fibroids that are left untreated. A patient with large fibroids may require ultrasound simply because the uterine size no longer allows the gynecologist to do a proper assessment on pelvic exam.
When treatment is warranted, patients can be comfortable that they have numerous options available to suit their individual quality of life goals. Some patients are better served with medication. Others may prefer surgery. And within each of these categories of treatment, there are numerous choices to be had
